Benchmarking software?

Benchmarking software?

Postby oswold » Thu Jun 04, 2009 2:54 am

I have installed windows 7 beta on my PC and would like to compare to Vista and XP in terms of performance. I am curious to know what performance benefits the new OS offers. But I am not sure how to go ahead. Can anyone guide me? Can I use PC mark vantage?

Benchmark software allows you to test the performance of specific components, and provides important computer indexing information, such as model of the motherboard, the speed of the RAM and the type of CPU your machine have. Windows 7 Beta is not an officially supported OS for PC Mark Vantage and compatibility cannot be guaranteed for all system configurations. You can use Sysoft Sandra, Cinebench R10, and WinRAR.

Just keep in mind that Windows 7 is still in its beta stages at this point, so any performance results are subject to change drastically before its final release.

You can compare Windows 7 beta to Vista and XP in terms of performance by using the following tests.

1. Note down the time to install the OS
2. Average shut down time
3. Move 100MB JPG files from one hard drive to another
4. Move 2.5GB mixed size files from one hard drive to another.
5. Burn DVD - Win 7 beta 1
6. Open 10 page PDF - Text and images, using Adobe Reader
7. Compress 1GB files - Using built-in ZIP compression
8. Install Office 2007 - Ultimate version, from DVD
9. Open 20 page Word doc - Text only
10. Open complex Excel - Including formula and charts
