Win7 clean install deletes everything from the hard drive

A Windows 7 clean install will delete everything from the hard drive on your PC so all of your programs will have to be reinstalled after the clean install has completed.

You have to reinstall most software because it cannot be copied. Data can easily be copied but the same is not true for the softwares.

The best way to reinstall software

First and foremost start the reinstall with your security software, if you have not installed it already. Do the remaining softwares in any order. Do have the licenses and product IDs handy. After installing the programs, check for updates. If there are multiple logon accounts on the PC, you will have to recreate them.

If you do not remember all the user names, use the folders inside c:\windows.old\users (c:\windows.old\documents and settings if you upgraded from XP) as a reference. To create user login accounts->select Start->Control Panel->click Add or remove user accounts. You do not have to create a public account because it is already there.

Steps to restore your data

Postby duncan » Tue Dec 29, 2009 4:50 pm

(1)Go to the C:\Windows.old folder, ->Start->Run->Type C:\users-> press Enter. Open the folder c:\windows.old\users (or c:\windows.old\documents and settings).
(2) Now you have two Explorer windows open. The windows.old one, source window, contains your data and C:\users target window. Open the respective folders in each Explorer window for example source window to C:\Windows.old\Users\yourname and the target window to C:\Users\yourname

(3)Please ensure hidden folders are completely hidden. If there is AppData folder in the target, then select Organize-> Folder -> search options->View tab-> Select ‘Don't show hidden files, folders or drives', -> ok. Move all the folders (but not the individual files) from the source to the target. When Windows gives the message that you require administrator permission, please ensure that ‘Do this for all current items' is chosen ->click Continue.
If you get the message ‘The destination already contains a folder named...', select ‘Do this for all current items' and click Yes. And if you get that there is already a file with the same name, select ‘Do this for the next X conflicts' and click Move and Replace.
If you had not entered your product ID to activate Windows 7 during the installation, then it is good time to do so. Select Start->type activate and press Enter. Click 'Activate Windows online now' and follow the prompts.
