If you like the Classic Start Menu in Windows XP and have been using it in Vista, then chances are you will probably be disappointed by the missing classic Start menu in Windows 7. Microsoft has not provided an option to turn on classic start menu in Windows 7, but people who are already missing it have started finding workarounds to enable classic Start menu in Windows 7.

I think there is no way to turn on classic start menu in Windows 7. The new start menu in Windows 7 is far more superior to old classic menu and Microsoft also knows that.

There are many new features in the new start menu such as Jump Lists and searching from the Start menu.

Here are some steps to have some sort of classic start menu in windows 7:

1. Right click on the Start Menu and choose Properties.

2. Click the "Customize" button.

3. A new window will popup, scroll down to "Documents" and then select "Display as a menu", then click "ok" then on previous windows click "Apply" then "OK".

4. Now click on "Orb" start button and right click "Documents" and choose "Properties". In this panel click "Include a folder". On the left via "computer" Navigate to "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\" and select "programs" folder and click the "Include Folder" button. You will now see it in the list in the "Document Properties>Library locations:"

5.Now you will see the old style of XP/Vista "classic" as far as a real directory tree.

Features of the new Start menu in Windows 7:
· No clunky nested menus
· Pinned programs
· Jump lists provide quick access to application features
· Search bar
Bad in new menu:
· Less space for "All programs" menu by start menu, usually scrolling is required
· Search bar without history
Features of classic menu:
· Laterally opened menu without using a mouse click
· Menus uses full screen height
Bad in classic menu:
· No recent opened programs
· No jumplist
· No search bar

I like the new start menu and its features in Windows 7. It is easy to open paint just click start, type 'pa' and press enter - Wow! Paint launches.

One annoying thing is that search bar is without history. When I type 'not' or 'note', the default is Sticky Notes instead of Notepad. So I have to type 'notep' and hit enter to launch notepad.

I guess some people use a lot of mouse. If my mouse does not operate, I can use the keyboard to change almost each and every single feature. I find it easier to use the keyboard keys and type a few letters and press enter - I do not even need to select it first before because it automatically chooses the top option (which is 90% of the time correct).

On Windows XP or the classic menu you click Start - Programs - Video Tools - WinAVi

On windows 7 you click start - type "winavi” in search - press enter
