Protecting data In Windows 7

Protecting your computer and your information is very important, as there are thousands of threats everyday, so taking extreme precaution is very necessary. Below are some of the methods of security available with the Windows 7 program and other actions you should take to ensure maximum protection.

Anti-Virus Program. An anti-virus program is mandatory when protecting your computer. It constantly monitors your computer and any unusual activities. The Windows 7 website provides a list of anti-virus programs compatible with Windows 7.

Encrypt Your Data. Encrypting your data is a good idea if you have information on a USB drive or your hard drive that you would not like anyone to have access to. To do this, download and install TrueCrypt. When your files are extracted, they will be saved in a folder named TrueCrypt. The only files of true important are truecrypt.exe, truecrypt.sys, truecrypt.-x64.sys, and TrueCryptFormat.exe.

To encrypt only a section of your drive, complete the following steps:
1. Run TrueCrypt.exe.
2. Select the drive you would like encrypted.
3. Click Create Volume.(Your drive will be split into two drives, the standard drive and the drive labeled "W" will be your encrypted data. You will notice this after the completing the process)
4. Click Create a Standard TrueCrypt volume.(You will be asked where you would like to store your data.)
5. Create and Save a file named Container.
Choose the size of the encrypted volume. (Windows recommends at least half of the file capacity Click Next.
6. Create a password.
7. Click Format. (During this time, your Container folder will be processing and you will receive a confirmation message)
8. Click Exit.

To be sure your encryption file in win 7 is operating correctly:
1. Access the W drive. If you do not see it, open TrueCrypt.
2. Click on the drive letter you chose earlier in the proces…
3. Click Select File. (Search for the file Container you created earlier.)
4. Click Mount.
5. Enter your password.
6. Press OK.

Access Computer to make sure your drive is there. To finalize the process, return to TrueCrypt and click Dismount.
