Things to consider before upgrading to win 7 or buying win7

Postby perceval » Tue Sep 29, 2009 6:30 pm

Windows 7 release date of Oct 22 is rapidly approaching. I am very exited. My PC is 2 years old and it is fully compatible with Windows 7. I want to ask that after Oct 22nd release of Windows 7 should I upgrade to windows 7 or buy a new PC.

Upgrade to windows 7 if PC is less than 5 years old

If your computer is less than 5 years old, then you can run windows 7 on your computer. Minimum hardware requirements for windows 7 are
1GHz processer,
16GB of disk space,
and 1GB of RAM

Do not run windows 7 on less than dual-core CPU, 2GB of RAM

However, for the most worthwhile Windows 7 experience, I do not suggest installing Windows 7 on less than a dual-core CPU, 2GB of RAM.

A good thumb of rule is that if you have windows vista installed on your PC, Windows 7 will perform as well or better on the same platform.

It is good to wait for win 7 before buying new PC

Buying an upgrade to Windows 7 Professional will cost you $200 and Home Premium will cost you $120. That is a huge chunk of investment that could otherwise be applied to a shiny new computer. Considering that a new PC can be bought for under $330 and $800 it's easy to see that $120 to $200 as a discount on a new piece of hardware which already comes with the edition of Windows 7 that you wish for.
