Windows 7 Updates

Windows Updates is a utility designed by Microsoft to make sure your computer performs its best by keeping hardware and programs files remain up to date. Windows Updates are categorized as follows:

Important win 7 Updates.

Maintains OS and important hardware files so the computer performs its best.

Recommended win 7 Updates.

Although not necessary, these updates are suggestions so that you can get the most out of your computer.

Optional win 7 Updates.

Suggests extensions, add-ons, and other hardware. These updates are more so for personal preferences, and does not vital to the computers operation.

Updating Your Computer

Don’t concern yourself with searching, Windows automatically notifies you when there is a need for an update. The updating process is rather simple, as the utility will guide you through. Windows also allows you to postpone updating. You can set this reminder for a variety of times ranging from minutes to days.

Due to the importance of some updates, if there is no action from you, Windows will automatically power down your computer and restart. Not need for concern, as any projects you were currently working on will be saved by the Windows auto recovery utility. You can also use one of the options below:

    Automatically download and install updates.
    Download updates and install them later.

    Manually search for updates and Windows will alert you whenever they are available.

To alert you, Windows will display a Windows Update icon will pop up in the notification area. Click the icon to install your updates. To change your preferences, follow these steps:

1. Click Start.
2. Click All Programs.
3. Click Windows Update.
4. View the Security bar. If there are no problems, the bar will be green. If you need updates, the bar will be red or yellow.
5. If there are more updates, there will be a link located at the top of the Windows Update window. Click this link. (The Select Updates to Install page will appear) If there is no link, skip to #10.
6. Choose the updates you would like to install. (Important updates will automatically be selected for you.)
7. Click OK. (Window Update window will appear.)
8. Click Install Updates. (If a restart is required, Windows will alert you. Close all open programs at this time.)
9. Click Restart Now. (When computer reboots, return to #1.)
10. Click Change Settings. (Change settings window will open.)
11. Click Install updates automatically.
12. Click Install new updates.
13. Select a time best suited for your daily computer activity.
14. Depending on your preferences, you can alter Featured update notifications, Recommended updates, and the Who can install updates sections.
15. After choosing your preferences, click OK.

You cannot remove a security-related update or an update that aids in the functioning of another update.

Updating Multiple Computers

If you have more than one computer or run a network, it is common to want all updates to coincide. Microsoft suggests the following options:

Windows Sever Update Services (WSUS): A server that allows the administrator to perform and monitor the updates of the network or individually.
Microsoft Update Catalog: This tool offers updates for all Windows OS’s.

Keep In Mind

Windows Update also keeps your device drivers operating smoothly. As long as the device meets Microsoft standards, it will be automatically updated.

Windows Update not only maintains your computer’s performance, it also saves you a load of productivity time, by allowing you to plan your updates around your schedule.
