Rather than going through this double step process, Here is a quick way on how you can open Task manager in Windows 7 by using a single keyboard shortcut such as Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager directly!

Right-click the taskbar (bottom toolbar) - Select Task Manager.

You can also have the Task Manager running minimized without having it on the taskbar; you can choose to keep it running in the system tray.
To do this,
Start Task Manager-> Options -> Hide when minimized to turn this feature on.
