Win7 microphone problem

Win7 microphone problem

Hey all, I've been searching online for the past 2 hours trying to find a solution to my problem, to no avail.

A couple weeks ago I was chatting with a friend on Skype, and all of a sudden my mic stopped working in mid-speech. I was plagued by malware/viruses at the time, and have since reformatted from XP on a fresh partition to 64 bit Win7. My problem is that I can not get my mic to work properly. However what I can get it to do is output what is coming out of my speakers. Meaning, I am listening to music, I test a record, and on the playback I hear music at the exact level. I do not think it is feeding back from the speakers to the mic, as when I'm looking at the column of green bars in the sound menu of the control panel, they go up and down with whatever audio is coming through my speakers.

I've downloaded motherboard and realtek drivers, but the situation remains.
